Offline-first SFA: field work with unreliable connectivity
Offline-first SFA lets a field team complete an agreed visit workflow when connectivity is unreliable, store visit data on the device and synchronise it when a connection returns. Reliability depends on a defined local data set and explicit conflict rules.

- SFA: field sales automation
- Durust: mobile orders, field routes and payment records

In detail
Offline mode is not a full copy of the server application on a phone. The device receives only the customers, products, prices, tasks and constraints required for the representative’s route and role.
The main risk appears when connectivity returns: server data may have changed, a document may have been submitted more than once or a sales rule may have been updated. Synchronisation therefore needs to be a controlled business process, not a hidden technical event.
Managers need a clear operating boundary rather than a broad promise that the application works without the internet: which actions are available locally, how data freshness is judged and what happens to a conflicting operation.
How it is applied
- Before the route begins, the device receives the permitted master data, tasks and customer information.
- During the visit, each event is stored locally with an identifier, timestamp and link to the retail outlet.
- When connectivity returns, queued operations are sent to the server in a defined sequence.
- The server checks versions, business rules and duplicates, then confirms the operation or returns a conflict reason.
- Pending and rejected operations remain visible to the representative and the accountable manager.
Practical checklist
- Offline actions are defined for each role.
- The user can see the synchronisation state of every critical operation.
- Retrying an operation does not create another order or payment.
- Each conflict has an owner and a clear review path.
Scope and limits
The same offline workflow cannot be assumed for every device, length of disconnection or module set. Local data, freshness windows and synchronisation rules are agreed for each implementation.
